BUILDING MATERIAL AND LABOUR SHORTAGES IMPACT TOILET PROJECT
Constraints on the availability of building materials due to COVID19 and high demand combining with skilled labour shortages means the completion date of Taumarunui’s public toilet refurbishment is now expected in August.
Chief Executive Clive Manley said that Council was frustrated with the delays on the project and recognised the inconvenience this was causing.
“Unfortunately, we are not immune from the pressures on materials and labour that are impacting building projects nationwide,” he said.
“We have found that some of the specified products are now unavailable or have a much later delivery date.
Council had also received feedback on the placement of the temporary portaloos with some people uncomfortable that the doors are facing toward the road.
The portaloos are actually positioned in-line with CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) guidelines as recommended by the Ministry of Justice for safety in public places.
We have placed additional signage highlighting the option of the i.SITE toilets for people who may want to use these instead.
The portaloos are cleaned twice a day and are being emptied every second day which is a high level of service.”
Mr Manley noted that when planning the project Council did not envisage that the portaloos would be needed as long as they have been.
Due to the longer completion time we are investigating whether we can hire higher quality temporary toilets to use in place of the portaloos and hope to have an answer to this next week,” he said.
