Drivers parking on the grass verge and footpath that forms the start of the River Walkway in Taumarunui are being warned that they could be ticketed following damage to the newly laid concrete.
Ruapehu Council Team Leader Community Property Rebecca van Orden said that it was very disappointing to see people unnecessarily causing damage to the new River Walkway path.
As well as cracking to the new footpath vehicles are preventing the grass on the verge recovering which is quite bare in some places, she said.
There is plenty of legal parking space nearby if people are prepared to walk a short distance.
Council has been reluctant to ticket people preferring to warn and educate as a first step however in this case where there are signs clearly asking people not to park and the damage is costing ratepayers a lot of money we feel it is warranted.
People parking over the grass and footpath are also impeding people from using the walkway and the picnic area which at this time of year is a popular lunch spot.
The River Walkway project has had a lot of incredibly positive support with many great comments being made on Council's Facebook page whenever we post photos of its progress.
Along with the northern entrance this is a signature project for Taumarunui and Council feels we need to make every effort to protect it for the future.
If people see drivers parking on the grass verge and footpath we would appreciate them calling Council on 895 8188 so we can take appropriate action, said Mrs. Van Orden.
