The completion of the accessible river pathway from the Ongarue River Bridge through to Victory Bridge over the Whanganui River is a great early Christmas present for Taumarunui.
Council Property Team Leader said that this has been an extremely popular project and it has been really good to see the Taumarunui community following its progress and positively supporting it.
The Ongarue and Whanganui Rivers and Cherry Grove are the jewels in Taumarunui's crown and projects such as this that improve the access to the rivers and allows people to enjoy the area more all help enhance our quality of life, she said.
As an accessible pathway it has been specially designed for wheelchair and pram use so as many members of our community as possible can enjoy these special areas.
In the New Year work will start on the second major stage which will see the pathway link up to Morero Terrace beside the BMX track and with the path that starts under Victory Bridge.
The long term vision is for a properly formed accessible pathway that goes from the Ongarue River Bridge down to Cherry Grove and then alongside the Whanganui River to the bridge at Manunui.
Council has been applying for government assistance funding from the Tourism Infrastructure Fund for the pathway however so far we have been unsuccessful with this.
While we will continue to seek funding support Council will continue to develop the pathway as affordability allows.
