Cherry Grove benefits from Taumarunui Primary's Rm 8 Blazing Helpers
Taumarunui's very own Student Volunteer Army the Blazing Helpers' from Room 8 at Taumarunui Primary have adopted Cherry Grove and the river side track as one of their projects and are working to keep it free of rubbish.
Room 8 teacher Sue Morgan said that the kids have been really enthusiastic about being involved in helping to look after one of Taumarunui's most beautiful and popular reserve areas.
The Cherry Grove project is just one of a number of community and environmentally focused projects they are involved with, she said.
In addition to helping to keep Cherry Grove and the river side track free from rubbish they have been regularly cleaning up the streets surrounding the school.
They have also done a project where they have collected all the plastic packaging from their lunches for a week and used it to support a letter sent to food manufacturers asking them to switch to environmentally friendly packaging.
The kids strung all the plastic packaging together on a string that stretched across the playground that they then photographed to go with their letter.
Ms Morgan said the Blazing Helpers' were also all helping pay for a cherry tree that will be planted in Cherry grove.
The kids really enjoy being part of these type of activities that help support our community and care for the environment.
It is really helping them develop a good understanding of the environmental issues we are facing and the importance of looking after what we have, she said.
