Strong voter turnout hoped for in Ohura by-election
Ruapehu District Council is hoping for a strong voter turn-out in the Ohura Ward by-election that opens today.
The by-election was called due to the passing of long term ward councilor and deputy mayor Marion Gillard.
Ruapehu mayor Don Cameron said that whoever won the by-election had some big shoes to fill in following on from Marion who had done an amazing job of serving her local community and the wider Ruapehu district.
We are very lucky to have four candidates standing which gives Ohura residents and ratepayers a real choice about who they would like to represent them.
Voting is by postal vote using the first past the post electoral system with voting closing at 12 noon on Friday 30 November.
Everyone on the roll will start receiving their voting papers over the coming week.
If people haven't received them buy the end of next week (Friday 16 November) they should contact Council to check if they are enrolled and then complete a special vote.
Council can be contacted on 07 895 8188 or drop-by our office on Huia St in Taumarunui.
People not enrolled are still able to do so up until 4pm on Thursday 29 November the day before voting closes but we would encourage them to act sooner than that, said mayor Cameron.
