Time running out for local candidates to step forward
Ruapehu Electoral Officer Warwick Lampp is hoping to see a surge in nominations for the October local council election before nominations close at midday next Friday 16 August.
To date the Council has received:
- One nomination for Mayor
- Six nominations to stand as a Councillor and one Community Board nomination comprising:
- One nomination for the Ohura Ward (for one vacancy)
- Four nominations for the Taumarunui Ward (for five vacancies)
- One nomination for the Waimarino-Waiouru Ward (for four vacancies), and
- One nomination for the Waimarino-Waiouru Community Board (four vacancies)
As yet no nominations have been received for the:
- National Park Ward (one vacancy for Council)
- National Park Community Board (four vacancies)

Mr Lampp says if you're a New Zealand citizen, over 18 years of age and you're on the electoral roll you can stand as a candidate.
All you need is the desire to represent your community and make a difference to your community and the Ruapehu district.
Anyone wishing to stand as an elected member must be nominated by two people enrolled in the district or ward you intend to stand, and pay a deposit of $200.
Nominations close at noon on Friday 16 August.
Mr Lampp urges potential candidates to get their nominations in early. Early nominations give us time to ensure candidates have included everything on their application, as we aren't able to provide an extension.
