WALL PLANTINGS TAKEN DOWN
Issues with the planters and irrigation has forced Council to remove the plants from the living plant wall at the Central Park in Taumarunui.
Team Leader Property Rebecca Van Orden said that Council has been forced to remove the plants that have been struggling to survive in order to keep them alive while issues with the irrigation system and suitability of the plant holders are investigated.
Unfortunately we have already lost a few of the plants and removing the remainder is the only way in which we can keep them healthy while we look into what options are available, she said.
We are seeking advice on the irrigation system and planters as well as looking at what other plants or plantings may best suit and flourish in that environment.
This advice along with the costings of various options will be considered by the Ward Committee but this will not be until their first meeting in the New Year which is on the 28 February 2021.
Mrs Van Orden noted that the current irrigation system requires significant ongoing upkeep with the pots being of such a size that they require frequent replanting and maintenance to keep the plants in a healthy condition suitable for the centre of town.
These issues would need to be resolved if the plants are to be reinstated or alternatively other planting options could be considered such as climbing plants or the planting of shade trees in between the seating alongside the wall.
