VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR REVITALISED DUMP SHOP'
Local clubs, schools, community groups and other not for profit organisations will have a new fund raising opportunity in Taumarunui with the revitalisation of the dump shop' at the Transfer Station.
Sustainability Educator Emily Jasmine said that a lot of people had been asking about what happened to the old dump shop' and so it is exciting to be able to finally talk about our plans.
Along with the building of a Hot Composting Unit (HCU) there are many other changes happening up at the Taumarunui Transfer Station including the plan to develop the dump shop' into a sustainable resource recovery centre, she said.
Reusing and repurposing stuff we don't want any more are great ways to reduce the amount of rubbish going to landfill and most people have probably seen great examples of dump shops' at other Transfer Stations around the country.
Over the past year we have been looking at the best of these to come up with a model that would work well in Taumarunui and help us with our Zero Waste 2040 journey.
The best dump shops' become a destination in their own right that locals use regularly to find all manner of things, and with community support we believe ours could develop into a first choice destination for recycled products and other useful stuff in Taumarunui.
Emily said that the operating plan was to keep things simple and start with small steps but most importantly we need passionate volunteers to help run the shop.
