More bad weather forecast
MORE BAD WEATHER FORECAST - GET READY - GET THRU
With Cyclone Cook forecast to arrive this Thursday and Friday (13-14 April) Ruapehu District Council and our contractors, along with local and regional response agencies, are watching the situation closely and are ready to respond if required.
The current few days of fine weather will have hopefully allowed waterlogged areas around Ruapehu to dry out a bit from last week's weather event before we get any more appreciable rainfall.
All Ruapehu roads affected by last week's weather event are now open.
The clean-up work however is continuing with slips, scouring and silt still being cleared in places.
Drivers are asked to drive carefully and be on a look out for road crews around the district.
With the possibility of more bad weather toward the end of this week and over Easter Council is urging people to start thinking about, and preparing now.
For households this means ensuring that they know what to do in the event of an emergency and can help themselves to keep safe.
A good place to start preparing for an emergency is to visit the national civil defence website such as www.getthru.govt.nz
Here people will find information on such things as:
- Developing a household emergency plan.
- What you require for your emergency survival kit.
- What you need for your getaway kit.
- Preparing for different kinds of disasters.
Farming communities should also be thinking about their stock and ensuring that they are moved to high ground early.
If we are hit by extreme bad weather and people need assistance they should call Council (24/7) on 07 895 8188 or 06 385 8364 unless it is a life threatening emergency in which case they should call 111.
