River swim spot information
Can I swim here?
Ruapehu is home to many fantastic swimming spots. These popular sites often include additional facilities such as picnic areas, bush walks, and toilets, making them a great place for a day out with family and friends.
To help keep you and your whanau safe this summer Council has set up a page on our website that links directly to the water quality information on the Horizons and Land Air Water Aotearoa (LAWA) websites.
Over summer these sites will we will be monitoring the health at 80 popular swim spots in Ruapehu and around the Region to provide you with reliable information on the potential health risks in our waterways.
In addition to the monitoring programme, Horizons are running two competitions over summer. The first, 'Spruce Up Your Swim Spot', encourages the public to vote for the site they would like to receive additional work such as weed management, improved access, and planting next year.
The ten eligible sites cover the entire Region, with public voting available on Horizons' Facebook page and website.
The second competition, 'Swim, Splash and Share Your Region', encourages the public to post a photo of their favourite swim spot along with the hashtag #swiminourregion and the site's location tagged to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Entries are automatically in the draw to win a $1500 adventure package.
