Taumarunui Motor Home Friendly
Taumarunui has been officially recognised as being motor home friendly by the NZ Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA).
At a special ceremony in Council's Huia Street chambers today (Wed 2 Sept 15) the area chairperson for the NZMCA, Harry Davy, presented mayor Don Cameron with a plaque that recognises that Taumarunui has met the NZMCA's seven conditions for a town to be motor home friendly.
The seven the criteria for becoming a motor home friendly town as per NZ Motor Home Association requirements are:
- A legally-compliant Freedom Camping bylaw
- A public dump station, Council owned
- Access to potable water at Dump station site
- Refuse and recycling facilities
- Access to medical facilities
- A general shopping area for groceries
- A vehicle service centre
Mr Davy said that there were now 60,000 registered motor homes in NZ and it was the country's fastest growing leisure activity.
Mayor Cameron noted that this recognition was an important step for Taumarunui building its reputation as a must visit tourist town.
"The next Ruapehu town Council is working on getting recognised is Raetihi which should be within the next 12 months."
"Although not all Ruapehu towns will be able to satisfy the NZMCA's seven requirements Council will be working to ensure all our tourist towns are receptive to motor homes," he said.
