Taumarunui's makeover is in full swing with various projects underway or planned around the township.
These include landscaping at the northern entrance, the first stage of accessible access on the Ongarue River Walkway, and installing new Perspex panels on the Domain Grandstand in addition to the on-going planning for the larger refurbishment of Hakiaha St and the Railway Station building.
Property Team Leader Rebecca van Orden said that over the last few years Council has been getting strong feedback that the community wanted to see leadership from Council, the Ward Committee and Enterprising Taumarunui Inc. for getting township development underway.
While people are excited about the bigger, longer-term revitalisation projects they also wanted to see progress on the smaller developments and repairs that could be progressed more quickly, she said.
In response, Council with the support of community partners has accelerated as many projects as we could within our limited budget and other resource constraints.
The Northern Entrance has seen landscaping and footpath work completed and the first stage of the accessible walkway from the SH4 bridge over the Ongarue River to Cherry Grove has just got underway.
The river walkway project will see steps replaced with ramps with a suitable gradient for pushchairs and wheelchairs to use.
The first stage will provide connections to Miriama, Huia and Taumarunui Streets and will end at Cherry Grove with a second stage from Cherry Grove to Victory Bridge and up to Morero Terrace alongside the BMX track expected to be completed by the end of the summer.
While this work is underway we are asking people to take care around any worksites.
Thanks to a successful grant from Trust Waikato the Domain Grandstand is having its cracked and broken glazing replaced with new perspex panels along with an electrical safety upgrade.
People who would like to see the Grandstand returned to its former glory are being asked to come along for a working bee on Saturday 4 November.
The Grandstand Committee is hoping for volunteers with a wheel barrow, rake, shovel and a bit of energy to help out with moving some metal.
Anyone who can help in anyway is asked to contact Sammi at Council on 895 8188.
