Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa New Zealand Geographic Board has accepted the proposal from Uenuku - Te Korowai o Wainuiārua to alter the name of National Park to Waimarino and National Park Station to Waimarino Railway Station.
The proposals for the name changes and for Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa New Zealand Geographic Board to consult on them were supported by the Owhango-National Park Community Board and Council.
Waimarino was the original name for the village and railway station until 1926 when it was renamed by NZ Railways.
Public consultation on the proposals will open on Tuesday 7 November 2023 a for three month period.
The process will open with notification in the New Zealand Gazette, then will be notified online on the Toitū Te Whenua LINZ website, its social media, through a media release, in national and local newspapers, and through other means such as our advisory lists.
The notification will invite submissions whether supporting or objecting to the proposals. Objecting submissions can also make alternative proposals. Public consultation and participation is valued in the process for making place names official to gauge any opposition or support, particularly from the local community.
If the proposals receive only supporting submissions, or no submissions at all, then the final determination would be made by the Board Chairperson as soon as practicable after the closing date.
If objections are received, the Board will consider whether to uphold or reject them at its first hui in 2024. While dates haven’t been set, this is typically somewhere from late March to late April. Should the Board receive objections and reject them, then the Minister for Land Information would make the final determination/s.
