Council Executive Manager Community and Economic Development, Pauline Welch, is asking people providing feedback on the proposed Raetihi multi-use community hub, Te Tihi o te Rae ki Mākōtuku, to look past the cost at this stage and focus on other important aspects of the project.
“We understand that many are concerned about the cost, especially during a time of economic hardship and a cost-of-living crisis," says Welch. "However, it is important to remember that this project has been seven years in the making. When the idea was first conceived, the current inflationary pressures and other challenges we are facing as a community —such as the potential closure of the WPI mills, the uncertainty surrounding the Ruapehu ski fields, and the future of the Chateau—were not even on the horizon.”
The proposed hub is still several years away from becoming a reality and depends on funding from partners and other external sources before proceeding. "It was never intended that ratepayers would shoulder the entire cost," Welch emphasizes.
"The project is designed to replace the aging Council library and service centre, which are both in need of significant upgrades or replacement. The hub would bring together a range of essential services under one roof, including the library, Council services, Te Korowai o Wainuiārua operations, the Police, and community spaces, creating a modern, integrated facility to serve Raetihi for years to come."
Welch is encouraging community members to view the project as an aspirational vision for Raetihi's future. "We urge people to look beyond the immediate challenges and consider the long-term benefits the hub could bring. It is more than just a building—it represents a vibrant, connected space that will enhance community well-being, support growth, and build resilience.
"Feedback on the proposed plans is critical to shaping this vision. We welcome your thoughts and ideas on the concept," Welch continues. "Let us know if the plans capture everything you feel the community needs, if there are areas for improvement, or any other issues that are important to you. While we recognize that cost is a concern, at this point, we need feedback on the broader aspects of the project.”
“We encourage everyone to share their views on what this hub could deliver for Raetihi and its community," Welch concludes. "Your feedback is essential in ensuring we create a future-focused facility that serves all our residents effectively."
