Mayor Weston Kirton visited the small rural Kakatahi School on the Ruapehu-Whanganui border last week as part of his commitment to visiting schools around the district. The visit, which saw Mayor Kirton meet with the school’s 13 pupils is part of his ongoing mission to connect council with rural schools and their communities.
"Visiting schools like Kakatahi is always a highlight," said Mayor Kirton. "The kids were incredibly engaged, eager to learn about what the mayor does and the role the council plays in their lives. They gave me a wonderful tour of the school gardens and introduced me to their school pets. It was a fantastic experience."
Mayor Kirton’s commitment to visiting local schools reflects his belief in the vital role rural schools play in keeping communities connected. "Having attended a small rural school myself, I know how important these schools are to the heart of our communities.
These visits are a fantastic opportunity to connect with our future leaders and help build stronger connections between the council and our schools," he said.
