Ruapehu District Water Treatment Schemes
Ruapehu District Council manages six water supply schemes in Taumarunui, Ohakune, Raetihi, Owhango, National Park and Ohura in the Ruapehu District for the sourcing, treatment and distribution of water.
Council purchases water from the New Zealand Defence Force and provides a reticulation service for the Waiouru township.
Water supplies in the Ruapehu District are currently not fluoridated. Fluoridation ceased on 1 July 2011 at the request of the Taumarunui community.
The Ministry of Health provides more information about fluoridation of water in New Zealand on their fluoridation resource pages.
Some of the smaller townships and rural communities in the Ruapehu District are not serviced by a public water supply system. These townships have privately owned water tanks or a community owned and operated private water supply scheme. Some examples of community owned and operated schemes are shown below:
TOWNSHIP | WATER SERVICE STATUS | COMMENTS |
---|---|---|
Raurimu | Community owned and operated private water supply scheme | Raurimu Residents & Ratepayers Supply |
Kakahi | Community owned and operated private water supply scheme | Kakahi Water Board |
Piriaka | Community owned and operated private water supply scheme | Piriaka Community Water Supply |
Pipiriki | Community owned and operated private water supply scheme | |
Whakapapa | Public water supply scheme | Owned by DOC, with operations and maintenance carried out by contractors working under instruction from Ruapehu District Council. |
Although every water supply system is unique to the requirements of the individual township and the quality of the source water, each system has a similar basic structure or Water Supply System Components.
