Abandoned Land and Rating Sales
Council can commence the Abandoned Land process on rating units that meet the criteria specified in Section 77 of the Local Government Rating Act, being;
- Rates on the rating units have remained unpaid to the Council for more than three years; and
- The ratepayers cannot be found after due enquiry and have no known agents in New Zealand.
Māori land transferred to general land under the Māori Affairs Amendment Act 1967 will be safe guarded from being leased or sold as “abandoned land sales” giving options to be reverted into Māori land.
Rating Sale is the sale of property to recover unpaid rates.
