How much will I get paid?
Remuneration
The Remuneration Authority sets the pay for elected positions in local authorities and establishes the rules for reimbursing costs incurred by elected members while on local authority business.
The Local Government Members (2024/25) Determination for Ruapehu District Council and its Community Boards has been published in the New Zealand Gazette and is available on the Remuneration Authority’s website and the New Zealand Legislation website.
Mayors and Councillors
Remuneration (pay) for Elected Members and Mayors is based on:
- The size of the council's role
- The average time needed for a member's duties
- A comparison with parliamentary salaries
Community Boards
The pay for a Community Board Chair is twice that of a regular Board Member. The Deputy Chair is paid the same as a Board Member, as their role is not seen as significantly different.
More information about how the Remuneration Authority determines pay can be found here.
